Bush/Plant ID Please
« on: July 26, 2013, 14:16 »
We are due to aquire the remaining half of our plot soon.... original owner hasn't used it for the last 2 years... and it has all the fruit bushes on it.

Smack in the middle of them is this great big bush/shrub type plant. I's about 10ft tall and quite wide too at the moment and it has had no flowers/fruit etc.. and wondered what it was.

Any advice greatly received.

Thanks in advance

Chris

My guess is (sweet) bay - if you crush and sniff one of the leaves you should then be in no doubt.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I did wonder if it was an apple or plum variety - leaves sort of look similar.

Or maybe a buddleia?

I think it may turn out to be one of those wait and see surprise trees  :D

Bay leaves tend to have a shine on them, so am very unsure it is that. Tend to think of some wild apple/pear thingy.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

My first thought was laurel of some type, but must admit I thought the leaves were shinier :)

If the previous tenant liked their fruit, the odds are it's a fruit of some  sort that hasn't fruited this year, looks a bit like an apple I must say. Is there any evidence of it having been pruned ? I think you'll be finding out in the Spring soon enough when they all reveal themselves :D
When I took over my plot at the end of a Summer, I also had a huge bush I didn't know at the time, that turned out to be a kiwi fruit. It looked like two plants, and took a year to find out it was only one and not doing the business, and so up it came, as it's roots snaked for miles.

Possible it's a Damson?  Reminds me of my old tree.  I can't remember about the pollination group for them.  Maybe it's not got a mate whatever it is  ???

Thanks for all your replies.

We have had half of the plot since last October and have been in eager anticipation to see if we do get the other half, the half that has the shed and all the fruit bushes.

We have been watching this plant to see what it produces..... all it's managed is leaves which is why we are a bit stumped.
