I have inherited a few obelisks about 7ft high on my new plot - they are almost cylindrical in shape but taper at the top a little. I am thinking of doing cucumbers so they can train to climb up it and outwards along some netting I will put between them. If I opt for this approach is it best to plant the cucumber plant inside the obelisk or just outside it.

Personally, I'd plant the cuke outside the obelisk so you can more easily water and feed it, as well as weed. You'll need to hand wrap the vines around the tower as they don't do a great job on their own.

I think if you plant the cuke on the inside it will be difficult to ensure that the rootball remains moist and the stem dry -- cucumbers commit suicide so readily
