Now it's up what to grow?
« on: February 23, 2007, 12:39 »
I have finally finished my Greenhouse!!

Now after all the hardwork putting it together and glazing it I am dying to start growing things!

I have some Peas, Chilli Peppers and Strawberry seeds that are in a propogator on the windowsill, can I move these into a cold greenhouse yet?

What else could I start now in a cold greenhouse?

Thanks

:)

I would be a little bit more patient, march is around the corner now and you will find seed sown in a few weeks will shoot up, this for me is always the worst time of the year because your sat around watching the skys waiting for things to happen, all I have going is some cauli's, beetroot, just put some celeriac and a few other bits but nothing major. Why not buy a cheap growbag and put some salad stuff in, little gems and radish and maybe even parmex carrots, remember last year we had snow in March.

yea try, I managed to have lettuce all winter this year, first time I ever tried it, they did really well, I used a growbag and put some polystyrene sheets under to insulate them.

That's right Aidy. Very nearly ALL of March in fact

Garlic does best planted Sep/Oct/Nov.  You will still get a crop if you plant now (outdoors) but the bulbs may or may not divide.

I put a load of garlic in in april so they dont split, keep em some where cool and dark and then re-plant them in Nov and you get monsters the following year.

Yes!, cover them with some fleece to heep keep the critters frost at bay.  We have been eating leaves all winter, and are now also adding the Hairy Bittercress from the plot.
Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

I do not have a bench but have two staging stands that came with the green house, they are only the frames though and have no cross struts so may have to buy some wood to make them up or buy new staging!

My poor aching back!

I spent the afternoon digging over beds, making a pile in the corner of fresh manure courtesy of a friends horse, getting my pea netting ready, and planting my rhubarb crown that has grown a bit wild since I got it home last week! oh and I re potted my mint plant and put it in the greenhouse to try and encourage fresh growth.

There is a bit there already but it may speed it up a little :)

I am now about to wash out all the seed trays that came with the greenhouse.

Tomorrow I will dig more beds, trim back the trees and hedging and take the dogs to the beach for a bit :)

for sterilising seed trays take two big trugs ( plastic ones from garden shops £3 each ) fill one with hot water and a couple caps of jeyes fluidd . and a kitchen brush  scrub them in the corners and dunk well . drip dry and rinse in cold water trug .allow to dry in the sun if possible , or drip em dry i use a wire coat hanger and screw it to the wall and poke one end through the tray hole .. use when needed

... Not surprised your back aches! Mine aches in sympathy just reading what you have been up to! I suppose you are pretty young and fit though?

She has been out on the plot a bit, and he has done a bit of digging and clearing for the forthcoming season, but it won't stop raining ... !

If it is dry tomorrow we'll have a go at the pots ...
