Can Grow one?
« on: February 04, 2012, 16:11 »
I want to try a quince tree ( Vranja not Japanese), but am I too far North. The allotment has an open aspect to the south but is quite exposed. I am between Stockton and Darlington just north of the River Tees. I wouldn't want to buy a tree , take up space and not get any fruit. What do you think?
Taken over neglected veg garden at new home. Enemy number 1 Ground Elder. Then there is the furry terror - bunnies - to contend with!
Made a start have beds established but moved in too late for serious planting. We shall see what 2015 brings.

I cannot see, why not. Check your local frost situation with the flowering times. That's the only important thing. They are generally quite hardy. I do not think most flower too early either.

R V Rogers in Pickering, North Yorks is an excellent fruit nursery.  They'd be able to advise you from their experience of growing in northern areas.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Vranja: 'originates from Serbia; winner of an RHS Award of Garden Merit'

Now, the letter means, Thestens, it does well everywhere, UK-wide.

I've put in a Vranja and a Serbian gold in my home garden this year..  As they are from Serbia they should grow anywhere in the UK I would have imagined..

Gavin is that you put one in recently or last years growing season? The latitude difference between Serbia and Teesside is quite different. I have seen Quinces growing in Serbia and it was a lot hotter there in August than it is up here on Teesside . I guess I'lll give it a go I think I can get  a 2m high tree for £20. What I would really like to hear from people who have done it successfully.

It's quite irrelevant, what's in August, as I said above. Also, the RHS had done it. We do not all grow every variety of plants known to man.

2 hours south from you, I'm growing grapes outdoors. We just felt 3 Quince trees.

I planted them in August and November last year. I was told they are about 3 and 4 year trees so ready to fruit.. They are about 10 foot high..

The point about August was a general one. A quince may grow it may flower and have fruit set but will the weather be hot enough for the fruit to ripen?
I would be growing it for fruit. I have a fig tree and it has had fruit but they have never ripened.

At the old family home in Glasgow there was a fruiting quince in the garden so the climate is not a reason you shouldn't be able to grow one. :)

Thanks Argyllie - is that a quince with the big yellow fruit or the smaller Japanese Quince with small pinkish fruit?

Quinces are tough and figs ripen the following year. :D
