Beetroot mmm
« on: May 29, 2009, 13:51 »
Well I have just eaten some cooked, non-pickled beetroot (from that shop we don't mention) for the first time.  It's so sweet isn't it?

Can't wait for mine to grow...  >:(

And have already discovered how to cook them by searching for previous threads on it.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I've got some growing just so I can pickle it for Christmas.  Lovely stuff if you cook it properly.

I've never tried it un-pickled before so am growing it for the first time this year.  I hope I like it cos loads germinated

I started some in my greenhouse border in January and they're nearly ready to harvest, but the stuff I planted outside are only 2" high with a second sowin made in modules so that I don't have to thin them out.

If I don't like them then I know my Nan loves them so she'll gladly take them off my hands :D

I was seriously worried there for a moment Yorkie  I thought you were going to say you had harvested some beetroot ??? ??? ???

Mine are nice little clumps of leaves but not much underneath yet

Don`t do pickled beetroot , far too vinegary and i like vinegar.
Lettuce sarnie, bread lettuce and vinegar , great .
Beetroot sarnie, 10mm slices of warm freshly cooked home grown beet plus salt and pepper in a good bit of fresh bread Mmmmmmmmmm*

*with an old shirt on cos the beetroot always escapes :)

John dislikes beetroot but grows it for me. I rarely pickle it because there is only me to eat it. I do, however, especially with small beets, cook, peel and freeze them whole and then I can just take one out when I fancy it.

I find the vinegar flavour mellows with age, just like me. ;)

It's a crime to smother the flavour with vinegar

Try baking small whole beet wrapped in foil
Or roasting slices with a little olive oil
Or a salad of boiled beetroot and rocket ( contrasting texture, colour and flavour )

Can't wait for mine to be ready
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

Try it roasted.  Cut into quarters and roasted drizzled with olive oil along with other roasty type veg.  Yum yum. But my favourite is pickled beetroot and salad cream sandwiches.
