Coal ash, any good?
« on: October 07, 2015, 14:37 »
I have been given 2 bags of ash from, I think, a coal fire rather than a wood fire. Is it useful on the allotment and what's the best way to use it? Is it acid or alkaline? All thoughts welcome . . . Thank you.
Plant it and it will grow.

It's what dustbins were made for !

Years back the cinders went on the paths, a bit of soot would be used around the brassicas but the coal ash was always bin material.

If it was good for growing the power stations would have no trouble getting rid of it like they do.

My garden soil is very dark from soot/ash from years and years of coal fires, the OBs on the plots still use it on their plots, but they say that it has to be weathered first.

John's take on it is here
