Kale: Cavolo Nero
« on: February 20, 2012, 19:37 »
I bought the seeds from Ebay and they came in a plastic bag with the name on but no instructions.
Could someone please tell me when to sow them?
It's better to burn out than to fade away !!     ;)

Had my first go with and sowed them last Jul/Aug. A late start due to the fact I only got 'the acres' then. Seem to be progressing but wont be ready for a month or two. Love the flavour when I have bought from Tesco.
Taken over neglected veg garden at new home. Enemy number 1 Ground Elder. Then there is the furry terror - bunnies - to contend with!
Made a start have beds established but moved in too late for serious planting. We shall see what 2015 brings.

With a bit more experience under your belt and asking the right questions you will find out why and be able to get better at growing it.

In 2011 I sowed my Cavolo Nero in May and planted it out on the plot on 11th June.  I had my first pickings on 16th July and have been cutting regularly until this weekend when I picked the last leaves just before it was going to go to seed, plus I needed the space for the shallots.  From 4 plants only I got a total crop of 2.5kg.  Which at £8.80 a kg in Waitrose is good value (a little goes a long way).

It had no pests and was so easy to grow, plus being delicious to eat, so I will be growing again.  Recommend anyone to try it.

Mine was ridden with white fly.  Did you net them AnneB?

They were netted in the early stages but only from the pigeons.  Netting too large to stop whitefly, and I didn't have a problem with that at all.  However I don't think anyone on our plot had a problem with whitefly for any crops.

Lucky you, it was a nightmare year here for whitefly.  Going to net them this year as they are so hard to kill once they take hold. :(
