I experimented with chitting parsnip seeds this spring. the plan was to rozzle holes using a scaffold pole, fill the hole with compost and then sow the chitted seed into the compost, thus resulting in huge, fork-free parsnips for Christmas......not. Nothing has come of it, no sign of germination, which, frankly, I am suprised at, I always use this method for cucurbits and sweetcorn and it works a treat, the question is is it too late for a second sowing, has anyone sown parsnips as late as this with any positive results?

I hope not.  I sowed some in toilet roll middles this morning because there is a dear little mouse in the yard who seems to really like them, bless him.

My first swings gave me 3 seedlings, so I have resown this week. .they will or they won't!

At this time of the year, I always think that if I've got the seed and the space it's worth a try.  You win some, you lose some, but seeds don't grow in their packets.

have to confess I was wondering whether it was too late to sow parsnips - my chitted ones once planted out did not come up ... I might give them another go

I sowed mine on 7th June last year because an earlier sowing failed completely, I got 90% germination and lovely medium to largish sized snips for Christmas.

Mmmm, been reading this with interest.  My seeds didn't germinate this year either, but the were last year's seed, so wasn't expecting too much.  So I may just chit the others and see what happens!   

I too thought it was too late really!  but, like you said, I will only be throwing the seeds out otherwise!

Have also been reading this thread with interest       ( my daughter tries to rib me for talking to 'your veggie growing friends'  yet she forgets when she scoffs down 'Dad's Potatoes'. )

Anyway , I have a pack of 'Hollow Crown' parsnips , sealed with a sow by date of 2019 from the Country Value range . Nothing to loose by chucking them in just a tad mucky underfoot.

I've just sown a second lot as the first sowing failed to appear.  Why so many failed first sowings I wonder?  I sowed mine just before we went on a week's holiday.  It had been quite wet here so I didn't bother to arrange for someone to water them.  We then went away to Portugal, where we got rained on for the whole week, and came back to find it had been warm and dry here.  Could that be the reason for the lack of germination I wonder?

Sowing some today, along with other seeds, to fill space left by pigeons that over the last couple of days had discovered my unprotected cabbage, cauliflowers, calabrese, broccoli and sprouts!

Try it, you never know. Even if they only grow small, roast baby parsnips are delightful.

Well I took the plunge, sowed two rows of Tender but True and two rows of Javalin, two full packets how much are you going to bet me that they all germinate? Next stop , carrots.
