Morning All,

Ate Swede for the first time a couple of weeks ago and loved it. So decided that I was going to grow it at the lottie.

Came across a seed kit last week, £1.00 for 500 seeds, soil and a little propergator thing. Bargain I thought.

So my youngest and I sowed half of them Monday tea time and put them on the windowsil. By Tuesday 3 were germinating. By Thursday the propergator was full of germinating seeds.  It is now Sunday morning and they are nearly  2 inches high.

I am beginning to wonder if I have been given "Cress" They look like cress they seem to be growing like cress. Is this normal? and if so what do with them now?

I also bought tomato kit and they are definately Tomato  :)

I love swede too.
They probably are swede, lots of seedlings look simialr especially members of the same family, I think cress/mustard/brassicas which swede are, are all related.

Does seem a bit quick for germination though!  Hope it is swede!   Lovely mashed with carrots in a little bit of butter and black pepper! yum!!!!    ;)

I thought maybe seemed a little early too but it does say "sow undercover" late Feb - April, Where as johns guide says May - June.

I have only sown half of the seeds so I think I will follow Johns advice for the remaining seeds. I feel a little experiment coming on here!!!

The swede I had was diced up in a roasting tin with parsnips, carrots, tomatoes etc lashing of oil and seasoning. I thought it was squash until I was corrected. Very Nice. This is one of the joys of going for a Sunday roast at friends houses, you get to try something new.

Shall try mashing, sounds like good old comfort food.

mashed swede and carrots my favourite way to eat both :)
I put swede into chicken carcass soup adds a lovely flavour to it

Yeah, all brassicas look like cress when they first germinate. Wait for the first two 'true' leaves and you'll see its not =]

I've found brassicas are always the first to germinate strongly and quickly, so I wouldn't worry.

If they're getting tall and growing true leaves remember to keep them moving (aka move into cells, then 3inch pots, etc ...)

presuming you've sown them indoors, the warmth of the house will promote quick germination - easily within 5 days  :)

Sorry to say this and put it bluntly but those that are already 2" high have little chance of survival.

I wouldn't waste any effort in trying to rescue, them, the outdoors is not yet ready to receive them.

I'm totally amazed that something that should be sown outdoors in May is packaged with a propagator for indoor sowing in February. Just shows you that some companies only care about parting you from your money!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks all for your advice, cooking and growing  :)
The seedlings are now 4 inch high and I have decided that as my raised beds are not ready yet I will scrap them. Fortunately I only sowed half the seeds so I have plenty left.
