But I seem to be forever washing something in the sink and watching my allotment soil wash down the plug hole
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

But think how much home compost you add to the plot by all those lovely peelings etc

That's what I do and then chuck the muddy water on whatever is nearest than looks like it needs a drink  :)

Knock off as much soil as poss back onto the plot and then wash off what's left clinging to the roots also onto the plot. Don't waste a crumb of soil down the sink   Imagine  :nowink:

Soil doesn't grow on trees!  :D

I brew my own IPA.  I put the waste from that first ferment onto my compost.
I wash veg in a bucket and all of the waste goes onto the compost heap.
Peelings, Skins, anything I think a rat will not want.  There is loads of good waste from preparing veg.

I rinse of the worst soil in an old washingup bowl which gets tipped on the garden.

I have a knife hanging on a nail at my compost heap that is made of wooden pallets. Any veg I take home is topped, tailed and cleaned etc. and all cut offs are added to the compost heap. Then given a quick wash on the way out at the water butt.

I top and tail and clean over the compost heap, though admittedly the cleaning sometimes is just a vigorous shake :D

After carting stuff home, then having to cart half of it back to put on the compost bin, it did occur to me to trim as much off as possible soon after harvesting if I can, including the roots (except brassicas)  Potatoes are lifted and allowed to dry on the soil surface which allows me to gently rub off any excess soil before bagging up to take home (I don't wash them if they are going into store)

Not really a problem when your plot is your back garden - I reckon I throw more soil away when weeding, especially the swines with fibrous roots which hang onto it (yes, I know I could compost them but I often don't get round to weeding until they are about to set seed! )
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

But I seem to be forever washing something in the sink and watching my allotment soil wash down the plug hole
  That was me last year! Now I do it all at the plot...chop off anything that needs chopping off straight into the compost bin and wash anything that needs washing in the bucket and chuck the muddy water where it's needed. Job done  :D Now I don't have mud all over my kitchen floor and in my sink and I don't have to cart stuff back for the compost bin! It only took the whole of last season to work this remedy out

I would love a mucky prep area, aka utility room.  I used to have an old wash house at my last house.  Sigh

Washing veg in the allotment water butt is a big no-no   Folks would go mad  :D

Keep a bucket up there - no need to use the water butt  ;)

I just fill my weeding bucket up for cleaning stuff before it goes home ;)
