potato confusion
« on: April 13, 2014, 17:16 »
I've managed to get myself into a right old pickle with my potatoes. At the end of March I planted two rows of 1st earlies, Lady Christl and Pentland Javelin. So far so good. Then I planted two rows of 2nd earlies, one was Nicola, and I can't remember what the other one was, I forgot to label them. I normally put in 10 per row for earlies and 7 per row for mains. Today, I took the remaining seed spuds down to the allotment and discovered I had Cara - enough for two rows, and Catriona x 10.
a) I don't even remember buying CAtriona and
b) I must have bought them as a 2nd early because there are 10 of them.

So, what have I planted in my second row of 2nd earlies???
I checked my notebook and I have written down (as well as the above) Kerrs Pink (main) and Wilja (2nd). No mention of Catriona.

It's a mystery.

... perhaps your username is fitting   I often get some seeds muddled - 2 years ago I bought some soup peas and saved the seed in the first year to build up enough for a big sowing last year.  Imagine my surprise when they turned out to be Golden Sweet mangeout  ::)

Cheer up the spuds don't know you made a mistake.
I find that some of my second earlies grow so big they think they're main crop!

Just plant the rest and have a surprise when you dig the others up

Cheers HH
Keep digging

Sure you didn't accidentally write Catriona instead of Charlotte??
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Well at least there will be an exciting surprise when I come to rows 3 and 4, and I don't suppose I'll ever know for sure what it is I've planted! I do remember finding choosing which varieties to buy rather confusing at the time, but I didn't notice anything amiss when I set them out to chit. The most worrying thing is how frequently these 'senior moments' are starting to happen :(

And how old is the captain?

It is a second early, indeed. The supplier might have also made a mistake. You might have got Catriona instead of Kerr's Pink. For that one is the only pink out of this lot, so you would have noticed.
