Hi All
managed to get some soot as i've been told its good at keeping the nasties away. Do i just dig it in to ground around the seed potato or on the surface above or some other way

i dig a trench put the seeds in and then sprinkle the whole trench

Have you double checked what was burnt in order to create the soot?  No nasty paint traces, chemical additives etc?
