Help Needed
« on: October 08, 2009, 20:57 »
Hi All

I am very new to keeping hens.

I have 3 girls 1 x Black Rock, 1 x Ranger and I Columbian Blacktail they are 9 months old.

The Black Rock has a bare chest otherwise she is in good health all three are eating and drinking well and each lays an egg daily.  I have checked her chest and it is very clean.

I feed them on Layers pellets 16% protien also treats of wheat and corn mix.  I add cider vinegar to the water weekly. The hen house is a Recycled Rubber house from Solway Recycling.  I wash this out weekly.  The other hens are fine.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jessie

Welcome to the hen house :)

Where does your girl sleep at night? It could just be where she roosts :)

Is it a large area or just small?

Thank you so much for your promp reply.

The girls sleep in the hen house is 1220mm long, 770mm wide and 1050mm high.

I go up each evening at dusk to lock them in but they are always on the floor so I pick them up and place them onto the roost bar.

Hope this helps

It could just be as simple as where she's rubbed it on the perch :)

Unless it's really red (angry) looking I wouldn't be too concerned :)

Hi Jessie  :) I'm fairly new to keeping hens too and learning all the time  :) It's just a long shot but as your other girls are fine could she be plucking at the feathers herself? I think if one of the other hens was a feather plucker then feathers would be missing in random places on her body? Do you get much chance to 'watch and see' or maybe work etc doesn't allow the time. One of our girlies has had sour crop and she keeps pulling at the feathers below her neck but luckily (touch wood) she's not pulled any out yet.
