Beans peans broccoli being eaten to stalks.
« on: May 12, 2010, 09:03 »
All the above are being eaten on my allottment.  The leafs have semi-circular cuts from the outside in.  Has anyone got an idea what it could be?  It is not slugs as I have tried to find any trails or signs and there has been.  Also do people think the plants will survive or do I plant more?
Time waits for no man and I can't wait for growth.

Neat semi-circular cuts would indicate pea and bean weevil as far as the peas & beans are concerned.

Does it look something like this?

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Looks like birds to me, could be pidgeons or even crows or hens!

You didn't mention whether any or all of your crops were properly netted. If they are, then it clearly can't be birds, but if not, it certainly could be, especially the brassicas and peas, but I'm afraid pigeons in particular seem to have broadened their palates (and their numbers!) in recent years.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

It will probably be what dd says i have major problems with peas with these things,so much so i have to start them in guttering then transplant when they are about 4 inch high to give them a chance to grow through the attack.
They like broad beans as well but never bother my brassicas?

Have a look at this thread - although it doesn't start out talking about this particular problem:

I was wondering what was going on till I found a little brown mouse sneaking under a loose edge of the netting. Oh never forget the mouse.  :D
