help please!
« on: August 29, 2009, 13:04 »
Hi I have a poor little ill hen.
She has a soft shell egg hanging from her and this morning she did a really awful looking poo (black yellow).
She under a bush a sleep and sometimes she stands up and still has her eyes closed.
I have phoned the vet and she should be calling back.
I really worried she is the sweetest little hen!
Any advise would be great.

The vet was very nice didnt say much I didnt know said she could have a infection advised might be best to see how she was today. She kept saying that the fee would have been £70 plus any treatment as bank hol weekend.
Anyway she was no better this morning but a little brighter was on the next box with black goo coming from her vent .So I held her over some steaming water when I put her down she walked away and a soft shell egg come out!!
So she is now walking around the garden with others she is still a little subdued.

Toads contain poison glands in their skins.
I dont know how toxic they are to chickens but the poison is enough to make a dog vomit and be quite ill.

I nearly lost my dog to something that poisoned her and we can only think it may have been a toad as there had been toads around the garden (the vet agreed) - their migrating time of year. If we had not got her to the vets when we did and chased around labs with samples for pure speed she would have died very quickly.

I have watched my chooks with frogs and they don't seem to come to any harm - you would be amazed how far a frog will stretch when it is being fought over!!!!!!!!!
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
