What's up with these tom plants please?
« on: May 21, 2007, 18:38 »
Hi

These were delivered to me from plant connection a few days ago. I moved them from the 2 inch pots into these larger ones.

Can you see that the stems are turning black and the bottom set of leaves are limp and dark?

Is it the dreaded blight? Are they too damp? Or is it something else?
Do you think it is our fault or should we contact plant connection for a refund?

Cheers

I could only guess that it is the shock of it all - seems much too early to be blight.

Await expert opinions.

Quite normal , nothing to worry about. Mine were the same ,once planted in larger pots, they grew in days and are looking great, as we speak.

The purple stems a sign of being too cold overnight in the greenhouse.
They should recover ok.

When you plant them in their final position you can plant them a bit lower.  I do this by the ring culture method I use an old large flowerpot with the bottom cut out.

I put this around the plant like a collar and gradually add more compost to it over time until it is a couple of inches from the rim.  The tomato plant stem will root into this and give a greater root system for absorbing water and nutrients.
