Hen keeping - Day 1!
« on: November 16, 2013, 17:37 »
Well after lots of research here and elsewhere we have taken the plunge.  The Hen House was ordered from Flyte So Fancy and arrived yesterday (Ikea flatpack style).

Just over an hour of work on my own resulted in this:-

Today we went to collect our Chickens and they seem to have settled in well.

The journey begins!

Hi SimonS

What have you got on the floor of the run?  I'm using bark chippings from a garden centre as ours are on a patio - is that what you've got?  Its proving really expensive and I know there must be a cheaper alternative but I haven't worked out what yet

Anyone else got any ideas?

It's chipped hardwood.  I bought mine from Flyte so Fancy but I've since discovered that you can get it from most tree surgeons or keep your eyes open for gangs working on the railways clearing cuttings and embankments.  They are usually happy to give it away.

Chipped wood will last much longer than bark and will not contain the various mold spores found in bark. It is also sold for use in playgrounds.

hi Honey

fallen leaves this time of year are plentiful - make a great substitute to bark chippings and are completely free

Welcome to the forums and welcome to world of keeping hens and all the worries that go with them :)

Are they warm enough ? :(
are they dry ? :(
are they getting the right feed ? :(
Is their water frozen/warm enough ? :(
are they ill ? :(
are they happy ? :(
Is that blooming fox sniffing about again ? >:(

Yes hens are great, but you worry over them as much as you do with kids
It's all about the journey, not the destination
