Delphiniums
« on: April 05, 2008, 20:58 »
What can anyone tell me about Delphiniums please?  Someone has today given me what look like 6 plugs in a sealed plastic bag.  He says he has had them since late last year and never got round to them and now doesn't have room.  They have produced very spindly, leggy shoots with the odd leaf, within the bag, and seem still alive and still damp - the bag has sweated obviously and kept them moist.

I've opened the bag and wetted them some more, sparingly.  Are they worth perservering with?  Can they go in tubs or must they go in a border?  How deep?  Soil preference?  Is this the right time to plant, etc, etc?

Thanks.

now is the time to plant them in the border, make sure you give protection from slugs...they love them, they'll take them down to the ground as soon as they shoot, they'll also need staking  cos grow tall, very pretty flower so worth looking after and they should clump up next year for you. :D  unless they haven't liked being in a bag for a year, poor plants

And thanks again.  They haven't been in a bag for a year though - since about December I believe.

Well I did what you said - into 3 inch square pots in some nice compo and on the window sill in a tray, and they're all settled in and putting out 2 or 3 strong shoots apiece.  Thanks a lot, looks like they've been saved and I'll have Delphiniums in the collection for a long time now.
