Follow link from WG. The answer to this question isn't one date it depends on spud variety and your location ie weather & when spring arrives. You can get more info by using the "search" facility at top of page. You could start "chitting" fairly soon so search for that as well as potato.

Have fun

Oh! Do you plant them all at the same time? I though you would have planted 'firsts' first then main crop later ?

Hi Scentedstock. I got confused about this last year.

Maincrop are left in the ground to develop further so stay in longer.

Earlies are dug up after about 3 months, when they are young and new, to make lovely new potatoes.

The various varieties have been developed to produce the best potatoes for the length of time they take to develop.

So if you leave earlies in too long, they will have lost their taste and may have been attacked by pests. Maincrops harvested too early won't have developed their taste and keeping quality.

Hope this helps

These were the dates I actually planted. In theory you do put the second earlies in a bit after the first earlies but it really doesn't harm them as long as you don't have frost. Mine had also been chitting for over a month so I wanted to put them in the ground before the sprouts became too long.  I put in a few main crop a couple of weeks later. Key consideration is what the ground is like and are other things starting to grow last year was a pretty mild winter/early spring here.

Have to be prepared to cover/earth up any growth above ground if there is a late frost.

Cheers

All potatoes are the same really, some just mature faster than others so can be harvested earlier.  First and second earlies should be chitted.  Not so necessary with maincrops though.

Hear, hear.

And just to trod on common beliefs a bit further, T&M last year started to add to its growing tips: plant main crops at the same time as earlies, to increase yields.
