Germination
« on: February 21, 2014, 12:45 »
I put my trays of tomatoes and chilli seeds in the summer house along with my chitting potatoes.

The thermometer says that it's got as high as 13 degrees and as low as -1.4 degrees.

Is this ok for the potatoes and will the chillis or tomatoes germinate, or best bring them indoors?

Are they better in my polytunnel?
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

If it gets that low I would bring them all in for now. The low temp won't be good for the tatties and I don't think that the highest temp is high enough for the chilli seeds either.

I agree bring them all inside, the toms and chillis won't germinate in temps that low - the poatoes don't want to be under about 5C. They may already have been damaged  :(
If they start going soft and sweaty, you'll have to buy some more

But people have said they're chitting their potatoes in frost free greenhouses.

Surely the summer house is frost free?

Wizzy, that is the best typo I've read in some time. Thank you for cheering up an otherwise difficult Friday afternoon.

Seed spud info I've read has said to make sure that the potatoes are chitted in a place between 5-10C
(eg see here: https://www.sarahraven.com/how-to/growing-food/1/chitting-potatoes)

Frost-free greenhouses usually have the heater set to come on when the temp drops to 5 or 6C - your summer house is getting colder than their greenhouses  :(

My guess would be "chitting", but I didn't spot it either!!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
