Depth of peas and beans
« on: January 23, 2011, 17:27 »
I bought a bean planter yesterday after abit of naughty encouragement from my OH and im now abit worried its not going to be deep enough.  How deep do they really need to go in and how much root space is needed?

Thanks

Broad beans, runner beans, french beans??

As for peas, like this & 2" deep.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ive no idea yet, just putting my feelers out really.  I have a selection of broad, dwarf and climbing bean seeds ready to sow but the soil on my allotment is thick clay and stones at the mo so im wondering if these planters would be better if they are deep enough.

Thanks for the pic aswell, i may well try peas this year.  I had a disaster a few years back and have stayed awy since, im a wimp!

I would think the shallower it is, the more you'll have to worry about it drying out in a hot spell of weather, which would be the biggest problem?

I'd guess they'd need about 6" depth of soil minimum, but if you're growing tall varieties, that would make the whole thing incredibly unstable? (and put stress on the plant as they need lots of water)

If your soil isnt great for beans I would recommend going up the bean trench route... Give them a little soil oasis of composted nutrients and nice soil to grow in?
