Potato Results 2010

We ran this last year and it proved quite popular:

http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=42233.0

(I see I'm a day late starting it this year!)

So, let us know the good, the bad and possibly ugly!

Pleased with mine so far, bearing in mind that due to illness they didn't get planted until May.

Pentland Javelin - (First Early) - Excellent yield, 20 off the first plant I dug. A staple for me.

Lady Christl - (First Early) - If I was pleased with the first, this was even better flavour wise, although possibly not as heavy a crop. Looks like these two for next year again.

Charlotte - Just when you thought it couldn't get better - it did. Also a must plant spud. Has never let me down. Sent down a treat with the salmon salad.

Kestrels are next, but I treat them like an early maincrop and they are still romping away.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

All grown in "potato" sacks as we didn't have room in the ground and all in the same mix of bought/our own compost:

Salad variety Charlotte - very disappointed with the flavour and not good yield. Probably won't bother again. Would revert to Pink Fir Apple my previous salad staple.

1st early Lady Christl - very impressed with flavour and yield. Definite for growing again.

1st early Rocket - still to try.

2nd early Catriona, British Queen - still to try.

Main Majestic and Maris Piper - still to try.

Only got room in my garden plot for first Earlies and had to try something more eelworm-resistant than Charlotte this year.

Grew about 35 Lady Chrystl, lost about 5 to what looked like blackleg, some got a bit nipped by the frost despite my very best efforts, and there were signs of eelworm infestation although most plants seemed to struggle through it. Not a huge crop by any means, but probably would have been better without the frost setback and with more water!

Big upside; really really tasty new potato which doesn't break up when boiled. I suspect I will have to run for cover when I say that for me, in my soil, they are much better than Charlotte!  8)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

My first earlies were Pentland Javelin, good taste and yield.

2nds Kestrel, dissapointed with these after all the recommendations, low yield and weird texture :(
and Charlotte......absolutely lovely and good yield, some nice big potatoes there.

Mains are Desiree......still going strong, fingers crossed for them ;)

My definition of PFA as "salad" comes from the fact that for the past few years it has been the only potato we have cultivated and it has been grown, harvested and eaten throughout the summer, mainly with salads.

Sorry to sound confused or be confusing.

Charlotte; Good yields and not a mark on them. Very trouble free. Now producing some good sized tubers too, a couple of bakers even.

Have been good boiled, mashed, wedges, roasts.

This is my first year so please bear in mind I don't really have anything to compare to :)

Pentland Javelin(in flower buckets) 15+ in each pot - lovely - will definatley grow next year
Charlotte (in potatoe planters and exhibition black bags 10-40+ - good taste, I just prefered the PJs - we did get some really big ones

Maris Piper, Picasso and Pink Fir Apple all still in ground

First Earlies -  Pentland Javalin nice but  was disapointed compared to my Home Guards last               yr

Seconds - Wilja as good as normal a staple for me.

Mains - Maris just pulled some tonight bumper crop by the looks of it, looking better than last yr

Pink fir Apple, pulled some in the week to try and lovely. One of the things i will always grow.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Lady Chrystl - lost a couple to blackleg, yield not great, not convinced by how it cooks but that could be me  ::)

Red Duke of York - looking good, haven't got onto them yet!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
