What is the best way to keep lettuce crisp?
I have grown Webbs Wonder and Lolla Rossa this year but the trouble is when picked they only last a day then wilt, I just cant get to the plot every day to keep picking Lettuce :(
I dont want to keep composting it if its not eaten straight away

I usually take half the root (couple of inches) into the house with the lettuce, ease off the outer leaves for use first, leaving heart etc.

Drop the root end into a jamjar full of cool water soon as you can and stand it in a coolish corner if you have one, but definitely out of the sun.   Slows down the flop.

I wash lettuce well, drain (but not spin) and then wrap the leaves I'm not using immediately in a couple of sheets of kitchen roll and put them in the bottom of the fridge.  Seems to work for me for a couple of days, depending on lettuce variety.

I pick lettuce leaves the night before I want to use them and plunge them into very cold water, then I spin the gently and store them in a box in the fridge and they stay good for days that way.

That works for me too

Yup, same way I do it too, as per Poolfield and peapod's method. :)
