red onions and shallots not showing yet
« on: February 22, 2011, 16:29 »
Hi all , i planted some red onions and shallots before all the snow and ice appeared at the back end of last year and i popped down to the plot last weekend and noticed there was no sign of them popping their heads up yet , do you think i may have lost them (rotted) ? Should i have a furtle to see if they are still there or do i leave a bit longer or start again with sets ? Thanks for any replies .

It won't do any harm to have a very careful furtle. Ours showed green before all the cold spell but they haven't changed in appearance recently.

I'd leave them a bit before giving up on them, not a lot will grow at this time of year, but by all means have a furtle.

I take it that they are the over winter variety, mine go in around October time and they have a little time to root and make growth before the cold weather. Once that arrives they slow to a virtual standstill.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Put mine in before the snow in November and they have just started to show. Looks as though i will get a good crop.

My Shallots go in on the shortest day, they generally dont start to show (weather dependant) until around March, the soil here is still very wet and cold, you will probably find they have put roots down and starting to collect the energy for a growing spurt once the soil temps increase.
Its really only the last couple of weeks that my garlic are starting to shoot up.

My soil temperature was 6deg on Sunday - still quite chilly.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I shoved some winter onions in October/November time and saw nowt. Then in the last 10 days they have begun to shoot. I've got rather a lot of onion sets as I thought that the winter onions were going to do nothing. Oops.
