Sweetcorn gamble....
« on: May 12, 2013, 17:56 »
My sweetcorn is now about 6 inches high and in toilet roll tubes. Some of them have their lower leaf turning yellow which I know means it needs nitrogen and I have given them the highest nitrogen feed I have (a tomato feed) a few days ago. The roots are also starting to come through the bottom so it is clear that they are desperate to be planted out. However, this week we are forecast highs of 15 and night lows of 6 which I know will make them sulk - so should I hang on? Which option will do the least damage to the plants?

Hang on or plant under cloches.

The only cloches I have are the pop bottle type - would that make enough of a difference do you think?

They would help a bit, and certainly keep the wind off them, but if the plants are six inches tall the leaves might get crushed

Mine are under  a debris netting construction, and I have my fingers crossed

The farmer in our neighboring field sowed his maize last week directly into the ground. I put some in today myself as I am sure he knows what to do better than I.  I am hoping the ones I have on the singular windowsill will last through till next weekend before I take them to the plot. This is in Wiltshire.

Mine are in toilet roll tubes , the roots are also coming out the sides and bottom  ::)
What i've done to get a bit of extra time in the green house ... is put the loo rolls into peat pots and added compost to the pots , all the roots are back in compost .

Ok, sounds like I will be ok to hang on until next weekend - this is my first year and I have read that sweetcorn don't like root disturbance so I thought that the roots coming out would cause longer term problems. Lets hope the night time temps warm up again soon!
