Plants for the tropical border
« on: June 29, 2013, 20:00 »
Hi all,

Have cleared and tilled the last remaining border at home. The back garden is all veg and lawn, the front is where the fruit lives, which leaves me with a border about 4.5 foot wide by about 30 foot long.

Want to try to create something a bit different to the usual front cottage garden feel by making it a tropical bed.
Have got bananas, hostas, cordylines, crocosmia, iris, Ricinus on the list so far but would appreciate a few more suggestions, of anything that you think looks tropical and will look good with what is already on the list.
As for flowers, I'd like to stick to reds, orange, yellow and whites.

Agapanthus?  There are some lovely white ones.

I got myself a canary island date palm tats about 4 ft, a few sedums, crocosmia, oriental lilys, agapanthus. These will stay put and be added to in the autumn. I have also added a load of seed grown dahlias, Ricinus and some love lies bleeding at the back. Hopefully it will fill out and give a good show before it gets planted up properly for next year. Thanks for the suggestions!
