Best crops for a cold frame?
« on: May 26, 2011, 09:39 »
I bought a cold frame which has done stalwart duty raising and protecting a host of veg.

Everything is planted out and the frame stands empty except for a few brassicas which will soon be hardening off elswhere.

What can I grow in there now?

I live in the north east - so prob a little colder than you guys all the way down there.

But i currently keep my butternut squash in a cold frame.

There doing really well - i open and close on decent days, most days to be honest.

Not sure how big you frame is as you prob know they grow to a fair size.

I'm only a bigginer mind - but fingers crossed there growing in there !!

salad crops if you like them. they say you can grow salads in coldframe all year round (not with the cold spell we had in past two years) but I would certainly vote for salad crops. and by the end of the year pak choi..  :)
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

If you don't have a greenhouse, you could try a melon in your could frame, they need the protection and it's better than being empty.

Little point putting salad crops in there at this time of year, in my opinion, as they'll be happy enough outside. I suppose you've got cucumbers in the greenhouse?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I agree with DD about most salad stuff but I love basil and find it does better in a greenhouse. It does not seem to do well for me outdoors - and before anyone says it - my basil is not faulty! :tongue2:

I might try a few containers with cut and come again mixtures. Some elements of these always get hammered by flea beetle outside which makes them inedible.

If I decide on melon/cucumber how big a contained do I need?
