storing carrots, parsnips, potatoes, leeks etc
« on: January 10, 2009, 22:00 »
i've left the remainder of my carrots, parsnips and potatoes in the ground over winter, as normal.  however i want to spread around the manure for next years crop and was wondering whether i could dig them all up and rebury them in my plot that will be used for roots next year (i.e. the one i'm not intending to manure).  i'm not able to clamp the roots, and my potatoes are salad varieties so apparently don't store in bags well.

any thoughts?

Hi Deano,  I'm afraid I've never stored my stuff like that, but someone more knowledgeable will be here soon I'm sure!

Just wanted to say that we've moved this thread to Grow Your Own so more relevant people can see it!

Have you thought about keeping em in sand.
I know it works with carrots, but for the rest I am not sure.

not really, i don't have much to store them in.  that's why i thought as they're ok in the ground at the moment, possibly just digging them up and covering them in soil in another part of the garden might keep them fine for a couple more months.

I have not left potatoes or carrots in the ground over winter, because always heard they rot .Carrots can be kept in the deep freeze if you blanch first.Salad potatoes are best eaten fresh from the garden and parsnips will keep well in the ground. But if the ground is frozen then its difficult to dig them up.
We dig some if we know very cold weather is due ,dig a hole and then cover the roots with soil and some straw or fleece over, they can be got out for use when needed despite the icey weather.
