White beetroot
« on: August 19, 2009, 22:08 »
I got a white beetroot. actually I had two but gave one away to a friend who told me that it tasted exactly like a normal beetroot.
Is there such thing as albinos beetroots? ???

Going to cook it tomorrow & see what it's like.

Yes, I have grown Burpees Golden this year, yellow beetroot thats tastes just like the purple one, next year I will try the white as the germination was dire on the yellow. I also suggest if you want a nice tasting roasted beet the Chioggia beetroot, its really nice and can be eaten raw in sald too!

I had one a month or so ago.  It had different leaves too although was sown from the same packet as the others:

But the purple colour in beetroot is sooooo good for you.  Like the red in tomatoes and the orange in carrots.

Beetroot is the latest superfood:

... and who can argue with beetroot cup cakes :D

Realseeds do a white beetroot that we find a bit sweeter than the purple varieties plus they don't seem to get woody as quick so you get more beet per plant.
Goes great with a sharp white cheese in a pie and of course doesn't stain anything you mix it with.
Apparently white beets were bred for the better eating quality of their leaves but I find that theywilt very rapidly.

I grew Blankoma this year as Pippa Greenwood felt it was her preferred beetroot in her trials for Gardener's World magazine. They have grown really well and despite looking like turnips they are indeed very sweet and taste just like beetroot. Not sure I will grow again as somehow the lack of colour unnerves me. My most successful beetroot is Alto, though Burpee's Golden and Chioggia Barbietola have done well for me too
If you can't be an excellent example be a terrible warning...

Chard, sugar beet, mangel wurzel and perpetuar spinach are all the same plant as beetroot with different characteristics. The plant breeders cross them all with each other to get better disease resistance, improved root shape etc so it is not surprising if there are a few throwbacks in the seeds.
