Tomatoes

I've been told you can leave one side shoot to grow to six inches, cut off and transplant. In a couple of weeks it has a good root system.

In the "old days" it was used as a back-up for any plants that died or failed for some reason.

Anyone tried this? Or is someone pulling my..............!
If all else fails read the instructions.

It certainly is true, I did a few last year for the toms that we really liked.

They go pretty floppy for a few days then spring back to life once their roots have established.

Do you use a rooting powder?

Is it possible to take cuttings from a pepper plant?

Been doing it for years as I always miss a side shoot or two.

Dont cut it, try & snap it off.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

last year i dropped 1 of my tom plants at planting time and the bottom of the stem was bent. I cut off the top bit and stuck it (the top bit) into the border soil and it grew and caught up with the others

it's a great, easy technique
I did it with a Black Russian (oo er missus) last year and kept it indoors when all the other toms got the blasted blight.
If you can't be an excellent example be a terrible warning...

New one on me -- that is one to try this year for sure. Would it in effect help to lengthen the season as the plants that are well on will have little ones to follow a bit behind.
Good question cabbage head and even better answers everyone,
