What can I plant in a sand pit?
« on: March 01, 2009, 19:25 »
I have been given a sand pit and I plan to use it in the garden, but for what?  It is not that deep (about 30cm) but quite a good size for a sand pit (it is a hexagon about 1m across)

Any ideas?

Without drainage holes I wauld say rice or watercress.  With drainage it would make a nice salad bed.
Cheese makes everything better.

There are not drainage holes at the moment but I do plan to put some in.

or the frogs might like it, and they'll help you keep your slugs under control :)

I like the idea of making a small pond of it, or you could fill it with gravel and use it for ring culture tomatoes. Maybe grow mint in it, don't worry about drainage holes for mint, it likes it wet. Mum's mint has an inch of water over the soil level and it's sprouting nicely.
If you grow stuff that is loved by slugs you could fill it with water and stand the pot or tray on bricks in the middle.
All in all I think it's more use without drainage holes!
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

If it's hexagonal, you could subdivide into six triangles with timber and grow herbs.
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

I love this idea!  You see I knew someone on here would come up with something great.  Although I do like the slug proof moat!   :D

There's a post elsewhere about planting a herb garden. I just wanted to recommend Greek basil along with all the others.

Cheers.
