white mould on compost and seeds?
« on: March 24, 2010, 19:34 »
Hi
About a week or so ago I planted some seeds in shop bought compost, the seeds are all starting to start germinating....but....a lot of the compost seems to have a fine white mould layer, some of the compost was covered with propergator lid and some were left open to air and mould is on both so dont think it was because they got to hot/humid. Is this mould going to be a problem with the sedlings or will they be ok....seedlings affected are mostly tomatoes/sweet peppers/sweet peas/salad leaves. thanks
Jim

Ive never had a problem with white fungus. Ive always just wiped it off with my finger and off we go.

Maybe let them dry out a bit as well, could be too wet.

I uncovered the area for my parsnips which I'd sprinkled with fbb a couple of weeks ago and covered with plastic to warm up the soil a bit and there was a layer of white mould. Too damp. I just turned it all over pulling up the drier compost below and planted.

I start a lot of things off in old toilet roll tubes and I thought the white mould was either a by product of using cardboard or beacuse of the amount  of lime in the water round here, but as others have said I rub it off with my fingers and anyway it doesn't seem to do any harm.

I use lolly sticks for labelling pots and I get white mould where the sticky sweet stuff is ingrained in the wood. Worried at first then realised the seedlings were fine....
