Allotment Path
« on: December 10, 2023, 15:57 »
My path has become a bed of couch grass and weeds due to all the earth that gets on it. I've now lifted most of it similar to lifting turf and barrowed it to a nearby woods for disposal. I want to redo it, it has a fairly solid clay base. I was thinking cardboard, then woodchips on top. But what I really need is some form of cheap edging to hold the earth back (it's on a slight slope). About twenty metres long should do it. Ideally it needs to be robust and won't rot, but I'm open to other materials. In the past it was old decking planks held in place by wooden stakes and screws, but it tends to collapse quite quickly, and rot, especially the stakes. Anyone have any suggestions that won't totally break the bank. Thanks.
Sorry trying to get pics right....no success. added some more instead  :)

Old bricks?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

That's a thought, seen some corrugated plastic lawn edging on Amazon. I'll try that first, probably a bit flimsy, but it's cheap, so not much load if it doesn't work. Not sure how I'd obtain and transport bricks. I'll look into it if need be.

I did try this plastic edging - it didn't last for that long (I think it became brittle over a few years), but certainly worth a try

If using lawn edging, look at the height as some may be too low when put in and the soil could still potentially spread over the top. I like the idea of roofing tiles which you could also stabilise by hammering in some wooden battens to keep it in place. Maybe a local roofer could help you out?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

after making the raised beds I thought what to do with the paths around the beds so I sprayed all the paths that had weeds including couch grass the put plastic membrane over paths including gravel boards with battens where the ground was open then
covered the membrane with bark chippings and it done the job

Just for interest, this is what I've done with the path, showing before and after using repurposed roofing tiles as suggested, and some Amazon lawn edging. Bought the galvanised tin after, it was more stable. Have now laid cardboard on the now weed free path. I am also separating it with two small paths on the plot to make four 3 x 5M growing areas to make crop rotation easier Just waiting for wood chips to turn up now. Think I'll let the cardboard get wet first, already watered it, but will wait for a short heavy shower  :) Thanks for advice everyone. Not sure what happened with the pics, also showing on initial post  ::)

Looks good, well done!

I know I'd trip over the raised edges, but then I'm not very good at picking my feet up  ::)

Yeah I'll have to be careful, ::) hoping to fill in both sides so it doesn't stick up so much. Pleased with it so far, was fed up with the rotting wood and the weeds.

Looking good but personally I wouldn’t strip off the weeds, just Strim it as low as you can & then cover with a few overlapping layers of brown cardboard and then put the chippings on :) would save on a lot of work.

Yes snowdrops, good idea, but I don't have a battery strimmer, and it was hard work, anyway all done now and pleased with it.
