Spinach
« on: September 10, 2010, 06:39 »
Good morning all.  I've had some spinach germinating in small pots in my back garden for 3 or 4 weeks now and they're starting to come out nicely.  Is it a bit early to take it down the allotment and plant spinach?  I've got a bed ready for it where the broad beans were last.

hi,

It shouldn't matter really i think, as long as the roots are under soil, pressed firmly and watered afterwards then it should be fine. I heard spinich if managed properly can provide all year round. they normally germinate and grow if you sow them directly but not too deep but this would be over spring/summer when ground temperature is better.

For the past 3 years, whichever spinach variety I have grown, it has bolted before I could use it as a crop. I had a few baby leaves in a couple of sandwiches each year and that was it.
Any suggestions as to non-bolting crops? Perpetual spinach isn't living up to its name for me!
If I can grow things in Shetland, then you can certainly grow things where you are!
