Tomatoes - slow growth
« on: June 01, 2011, 17:26 »
Hi,  I am growing various tomatoes, both at home in pots and in the ground at the allotment, and all of the plants seem to be very slow putting on any height this year.  The plants appear healthy in themselves, and they have started to produce flowers, but while they are thickening up reasonably well, none of them seem to have grown any taller since I planted them out/into pots.  I would estimate that they were all only about 4 inches tall.  Based on previous years experience. this seem unusual.  Should I be worried? ???

Welcome to the forums, it would help if you could put your rough location in your profile as with the variation in climate it helps with questions like this.

There have been a lot of posts regarding poor/slow growth this year. This is really down to the overnight temperature that haven't picked up, causing the plants to sulk.

Hopefull it will warm up soon and everything will get going.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That's fine & dandy, but what about overnight, that's what we should be looking at.

Only 5oC for us Sunday night - way too cold.

This is probably a silly question, but are you sure that they are not a hanging basket variety? 4 inches and flowering seems very unusual for a normal variety.

My Sungold are tall, sturdy and flowering nicely as usual and the other types are coming along but the Tigerella are tiny and spindly.
I think most are stocky because of the winds we've had and although mine are fairly protected from cold on the patio the nights have been chilly.
It's the watering that's doing me in! I've grown 14 types, 4 of each (10 each of the tumblers) to try them out for future growing. I'm also doing some in beds, some in pots to see if there's any difference. Less watering in the beds!
There's a freezer waiting to fill up with bags of toms. blight permitting.
Last year I ran out at Christmas so I'm hoping I can freeze lots more.
I have been buying Lidl speciality assortment toms for a while now to get me in the mood for my own toms! They're not bad at all......

If it makes you feel any better mine are all a bit on the small side this year up to now compared with last year.
I'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Please be patient! Learner gardener - allow plenty of room when passing!

Mine are all big and sturdy, all outside, and the hanging basket ones have both flowers and fruit on them, but I do live in a warm part of the country and my garden is sheltered.

Cheers for the responses - I had kind of assumed it was down to the weather so far but nice to have reassurance.  After the warmer weather at the end of last week they now seem to have woken up and are growing away.  Cheers again.

My sungold are growing fine but my Moneymaker isn't  :(....

I have a strong feeling I've been overenthusiastic removing its leaves and 'stopped' it by mistake.

I'm hoping the garden centres are still selling tomato plants x

...or you could stop removing side shoots for a week to let them grow and when some are an inch or two long try potting them up as cuttings.  They strike really quickly and then seem to grow away like billy-oh.
