Blue Cochins - fantastic birds!!!
« on: February 18, 2008, 12:01 »
Does anyone have any of these amazing birds??

I have just brought 2 blue cochins at a poultry show and i am amazed at how friendly they are. Quite happy to sit on your shoulder!! Only had them for 2 days. Great for children apparently and i can see why. They are getting a bit of a hard time from Ruby (hybrid brown) who sees herself as the leader of the pack. Any suggestions as to how i can ease this difficult time??

Also, i understand that they are not fantastic layers?? The info card with them said that they were hatched in summer 07 - should they be laying by now or are they slow to get to that point. I am told that they can grow to 13lbs!!

Any help or experience would be appreciated.
If you do things well, do them better. Be daring, be first, be different, be just.

A big bundle of blue feathers!  The one I was offered had lighter tail feathers, giving it a lacy look.  Very pretty.

They are beautiful birds, I only have one, a cockerel but will be getting some hens soon, how old are yours? please note this breed matures late and the cocks get to about 13lbs in weight, the hens about  9lbs so they wont be sitting on your shoulder for long. Check out The Devonshire Traditional Breed Centre, for more info, in the mid 1800's these birds cost over £2500 each to buy, enjoy them. Bruno was given to me because he attacked his owner but I,ve had no probs with him, in fact yesterday he cured my rat problem, bless :D
