But I can't/won't spray anyway as not allowed - I'm on an organic site.
I need to do some research about whether there is any organic solution - I suspect there isn't  :(

I thought organic gardeners could use Bordeaux mixture ?
I've no idea - I've never looked in to it.   Have only grown potatoes in small quantities at home and have never had blight problems.  It's a whole new world for me  :(  Must do some research!!
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

Spray is not a cure, it's a preventative measure.

At the moment with only one unconfirmed outbreak in the north of Scotland, I see no reason to start panicing.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You don't have to do anything yet.

Keep an eye on where the outbreaks are around the country.

This is the most important thing to keep an eye on:

Blight Map

When it starts to fill up with red dots, especially big ones - that's the time to start panicing!

Phew, Thanks. But if i does happen what do i do then? I have read all sorts about spraying them with different chemicals, but can anyone tell me what they do, contain or the risk to humans. Dont want to poison my wife as she is expecting. Would like to just say though how great ths forum is and how considerate and helpful everyone is on here. In a world that is full of hate and sorrow, its nice to get a breath of fresh air with such nice people :).

*** crops must not be harvested for 7 days after application. That means that it is probably not practical to spray earlies.

I wonder if that just applies to crops that Dithane actually comes into contact with, such as tomatoes? Dithane is in effect an anti fungal surface dressing that won't come into contact with the spuds themselves.

Don't get me wrong here - I'd err on the side of caution.

The instructions on the box says
Potatoes (blight) 7 day harvest interval
Tomatoes (blight) 7 days harvest interval for outdoor and 2 days for protected.
Lettuce (downy mildew) 7 days harvest interval for outdoor and 3 weeks for protected.

Not sure I understand the logic of indoor and outdoor difference for lettuce and tomatoes.

I saw a bit on the news about blight resistant genes being introduced from South American strains of potato. That is totally different in my book to introducing genes from unrelated crops. It probably means that the scientists can introduce blight resistance relatively quickly which would take normal plant breeding techniques 20 years to achieve.
