What I did on the allotment today
« on: February 28, 2010, 22:07 »
I love checking out the "daily harvest thread"
I'm a newbie but it really gives me hope that soon I will be feeding myself.
I would love if there was a "what I did today" thread along similar lines, with or without pics.
Kind of a collaborative running diary and also a really helpful resource for us newbies, so we can read each day and go - oh I should get the finger out and do that too.
There are loads of great guides on what needs to be done each month but having a daily chat will jog the memory. Especially for the likes of me as I don't have any real life allotment neighbours to chat with.
If this already happens sorry, could you point me towards it?

So today:
I checked my winter onions sets and am worried they aren't sprouting. Was advised to pull on them gently to check their roots are growing. There may be hope yet.

As a nearly newbie (only second year of growing) I think this daily or even weekly posts about jobs would be great.
This weekend I:

Ordered the last of my seeds
Drew up charts of sowing times and layout plans of my raised beds (very sad but I love it!)

Good luck Mahogony, you will be eating fresh peas before you know it!!

Great, glad someone thinks its a good idea, I saw loads of views but no replies so wa worried I was being stupid.

Good twist on the idea, maybe weekly would be better. More of a "What I am planning to do this week/weekend & what I did this week/weekend.

Nothing sadly, it's so wet there's no point in trying to do anything to it.  Here's to a drier week!!
Still, the kids and I managed to sow some leeks in an old cat litter tray, DD style, and
sowed some broad beans and cabbage in root trainers,
plus some toms into the heated propagator.
So all was not lost.
Roll on spring!
 :)
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

There's already a member's diary thread in existence here http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=12601.0 which may be useful as long as people keep them up to date. I can envisage a thread such as suggested becoming extremely cluttered if say, 50 people added to it each day.

Information and advice is also more useful and relevant if you know the rough location of the poster as the climate can vary a lot across the country. Perhaps you could put yours in please, Mahogony.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Rained all day yesterday - back and work and the sun's out!
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

No rain in sunny Cheshire yesterday, had three hours on the land, dug over my last beds ready for spuds, and put in little pear and apple trees for the espalier treatment...

Also got my shed in its final resting place, generally tidied up and feel well placed now for the coming season...bring on the sun!!

My second plot is now filled with raised beds ready for planting, some fruit bushes (well twigs, but I can hope!) and the frame for the chicken run.  Shame it wasn't sunny like this yesterday but you can't have it all I guess!

well, I went down today full of good intentions.  Took my fruit trees on the bus  :D was fun watching the quizical expressions on peoples faces.

I also took my garlic down to plant and was horrified when I separated the cloves and puffs of green dust filled the air... they were full of mould, so anyone who has yet to buy theirs, avoid Aldi's or at least give them a good check before leaving the store and chucking the receipt away

When I got there the soil was far too wet to plant either the garlic or the trees so we spent the day reinforcing the greenhouse roof that had badly beveled, just need to get it watertight now.

I did manage to sow some spring onions in a litter tray and lift the wooden edges of the old paths ready to put in their new places.

I was over the moon to see that the raspberry canes i'd lifted before Christmas and left lying outside in buckets of water were budding and not dead as i'd suspected.
What if the Hokey Cokey IS what its all about...

Lifted 3 bucketfuls of alien parsnips (didn't thin them enough) - now looking forward to all evening peeling and freezing.  Got some manure.  Burnt loads of prunings.  Drank loads of tea - all in all the perfect day (it just wasn't long enough).
Carol - aiming for organicness.
