Oca - harvesting question
« on: November 20, 2013, 14:48 »
First year growing Oca so advice gratefully accepted earlier in the year and again now! :)

I still have loads of leaves on my Oca - I presume a heavy frost will be the end of the leaves.
When can I start digging around - before leaves are gone or after?

Our winters can be quite mild and wet - especially November in these parts - so I'm reckoning my harvesting may be later than other parts of the country maybe?

Looking forward to the harvest - hoping I've done a good job!

Last year (first time oca growing), I waited for frosts and until the plants had gone yellow and collapsed and then dug them up ... there were some decent sized sones, but loads of tiddlers and you could see some tubers just starting to form on the root ends.  Clearly too early - I have a feeling the plants have to be blackened and decomposed before lifting  ::)

The  tubers continue to form from some additional underground storage organs in the stems (or that's what it looks like)

It is worth leaving them as long as you can. Last year I dug most of mine up on New Year's Day as it was very mild and sunny  :D

I have furtled a few out this year already for salads, but am leaving them alone after that until after the end of the year

I am leaving mine as long as possible.  There is a recent video from someone harvesting oca called "Oca South American vegetable growing in Dorset England." on YouTube. His is similar to my crop last year.

I'm thinking of putting mine into a perminant area in a sunny part of the forest garden then any volunteers will be in the best place for the next year.

They don't seem to mind staying in the same place and as they are disease free (so far, anyway) a permanent planting area could work well.

I grew mine under tomato plants this year, with a second lot alongside beetroot.

Mine were in with the toms this year too. Not sure I should have put them in the greenhouse though, I forgot how tall they can grow and it was like a jungle in there.  ::)  Some good sized tubers already so fingers crossed for a bumper harvest.  ;)

Been to the lotty today and the frost has just got them It will be great to see how many. I started with 6 for 9.00 sharp intake of breath which became 123 plus a few I missed so doing the maths. 2500+?
I've covered the sunny area of grass in the forest garden with membrane in the spring I'll cover wuh cardboard and organic matter and plant into that and try it as a perminant home.
