FYI spring Onions
« on: April 29, 2009, 16:29 »
I remember chatting to some one on here might of been mumof stig about spring onions and said I was gonna do a little experiment with brand new pack of white lisbon spring onions, year old one white Lisbon and winter hardy white lisbon.  Because I reckoned the winter hardy grew easier.

Well I sowed some of each 2 weeks ago indoors and more of the winter hardy ones have come up and look stronger.  At the mo they are in a hot conservatory soon to be moved.

I grew some Winter Hardy ones last September and they are great now.  I am convinced that that is what I shall be sowing from now on.

You can sow outdoors march to september and harvest is march to october as on pkt.  August to september sowings ready following spring.

I had winter hardy WL growing in the greenhouse, sown at start of  September and they did nothing :( I ended up throwing them out a few weeks ago cos i needed to get the g/h ready for the toms.
Have now sown perennial welsh onions ( they're now ready to transplant) in the hope that once they establish i will have a permanent supply of 'spring onions'...fingers crossed
for me :)
Onions don't seem to grow very well generally in my soil, even the sets i put in last year didn't really come to anything much, so glad yours are growing well now :)

Wonder if thats cos I use muti puposecompost.  I grow most in the big blue mushroomboxes Tesco chuckout as rubbish.  Their stock ones that they fill the shelf up from that is not the little ones for consumers (only say that as someone once thought I meant a little button mushroom box.  Let us know how the welsh ones do.

I've never had much luck with spring onions. This year I have a couple of (short!) rows up and straightened out from their hooky shape but they seem to have stopped growing despite rain and sun.

Oh  :tongue2: :tongue2:

I planted two seed trays of winter hardy ones on the 1st November and we ate the first two today. They are pretty small still (pencil width at the bottom) but starting to fatten up.

Has anyone tried red spring onions, how do they do?

Onions from seed never look much of a crop. until Derby day when they shift from root and leaf to bulb growth.
