MUM can i have a go at making
« on: July 02, 2013, 14:04 »
Oh my is all i am going to say

DD who is 12 spied my blueberries and said can i make a batch of jam. I agreed and she said i have seen some other bits i could add to my 1lb of blueberries. Still thinking yeah ok she'll change her mind in a moment. Next she has the pan ready and in goes

1lb frozen blueberries
1lb frozen yellow plums
1lb of strawberries
1lb eating apples.

She is making one pound jam apparently, i just stood in the doorway and said "ok" she must have guessed what i was thinking as she replied.

Well you did say you needed room in the freezer for the diced turnips.
I am giving her the chance to play at jam making so watch this space. Se cant do much more till i have been to the shops as we are out of sugar.

If its awful she is eating every last drop.

Nice to see you encouragng her. I only discovered the joys of jam and soup making about 6 years ago because my mother never encouraged me and i thought they were really complicated. The real reason was she never liked cooking anyway( or me for that matter).

I was like you. It was only wondering what to do with the spare veg etc that got me having a go.

I was abit dubious when she was throwing fruit into the pan, i had visions of georges marvellous medicine  but this time she did well and actually she has a beautiful set and the colour is amazing. Of coursr now any future jam i make will be heavily supervised i can see it coming.

It's great to hear about youngsters getting active in the kitchen: my son when about 12 or so was going to make Victoria sponge at school & had been told it was traditional to use raspberry jam.  I didn't have any & said he could use what we had as it was for tomorrow & I wasn't running off shopping for that! As we mums do....

So he went down the garden, picked the raspberries & made his own jam.....

He's a really keen cook & is doing GCSE in Food Technology - it's probably not a career choice, but he won't be living on baked beans and takeaways when he leaves home!

My wee boy is almost 4 now but has been helping in the kitchen for the last 2 years.  He loves to help make cakes and bread but won't eat any of it and likes to stir the pots on the cooker (with mummy standing no more than 2 inches away of course).  He was helping me make strawberry jam on Sunday morning.

:) My 9 year old grandson enjoys a bit of cooking. We made courgette and potato soup after school yesterday. Of course we had to pick the main ingredients first. :D
