Hello my allotment is on the fens and is peat soil i want to grow swedes as i really like the taste of them but speaking to another grower on the allotment site he says they taste funny when you grow them in the peat he dont know why has anybody got any ideas why ? ..

Maybe he means they tasted stronger than those you buy in shops?

That would be the extra freshness of home grown produce I reckon 

(A bit early to sow them yet though ---May is about right most years)

Probably because the Fen's are normally made up of rich dark peat which i think is acidic. Correct me if i'm wrong but swede's are brassica family and prefer alkaline soil's.

Thankyou sunshine and fatcat for your replies when the time is right i will try them and see what they taste like good i hope but if not the dog will eat them ...
