Winter Squash Variety
« on: September 13, 2014, 13:36 »
There as been one or two threads posted recently regards Squash. Having only a smallest allotment I'm restricted to a certain variety of Squash, bush type. I did plant two Squash this season, unfortunately the trailing variety. And of course half of the allotment is covered with large green leaves!!! So, please any advice of what bush type winter squash I should check-out and try? I've noticed Celebration and Golden Nugget varieties have been mentioned. Thanks.

I've found Golden Nugget to be excellent where space is at a premium.  I have a mound of well rotted manure/compost about 1.5m square, and have managed to fit 4 in.  I sink an upturned water bottle next to each plant to help with watering.  :)

How about a bush type butternut? Butterbush F1 produces smallish fruits.

You could try growing some of the smaller fruiting vine types up a trellis - usually no need to provide any support to the fruits as you'll find the stalk strengthens as the weight is gained.  Some varieties include Rolet Gem Squash, maybe the Red Kuri.  A strange fruiting one called Tromba from Seeds of Italy produce long slightly curved fruits with a bulbous end where the seeds are so the rest is all edible flesh, and they seem to do better when allowed to climb up a support of some kind.

I grow Tromba every year - I love it  :)
If you look at the youtube link here

you can see just how huge Tromba d'albenga can grow   So unless you have a fence around your allotment, so it can ramble along it, or space for a strong tripod - I wouldn't recommend it.
