Read the forecast and BBC is predicting westerlies by the end of week. planning to bung the earlies in. Good idea? anybody with me?
problem might me next weekend when we have to work in rain/wet ground.

The soil is too cold here even to think about it ...  are you a lot warmer in Bristol?

It is warm at bristol days. The nights are cold though. I have a open water in my back garden(testing the coldness. It is in the shade and never get sunlight) and yesterday it didnt defrost at all. The thin ice was still there.

 I tend to use saint Patricks day as a rough guide for planting spuds but this year it has been so cold I think I will give it a couple more weeks and be an April fool! We have had a lot of hard frosts  in Sheffield recently. I might start on my onions if it stays dry and bright until the weekend, I have about 350 to plant so I am itching to make a start.

will put in the earlies in the weekend. the ground has been covered since october and will probably hold. if anything goes wrong I know who to blame!!

I would wait, it is safer. The soil is still very cold and wet and needs a longer spell of warmer weather to warm up sufficiently. I read that it is supposed to be still cold next week (after a weekend which is a bit warmer than this week). Warmer (sping) weather is not expected till the end of the month.

Im in North Bristol so not far from the OP, still geting ground frost here. No chance of planting spuds out yet..

Had a good ground frost thismorning, even greenhouse border had a forsty cap.

Here in Norfolk it has been -5 inside my greenhouse for the last 2 nights. Am not putting anything in my outside raised beds yet until the weather warms up.

Good frost on the car this morning. Water in the shade still iced over. Still winter here in Lincolnshire!!!
