Okay thanks, Hamstergbert - I'll sort out another part of the bed and sow a few more seeds.

My carrot growing attempts seem to be doomed! I sowed more seeds between the (moved) seedlings in the hope of getting a few straight carrots along with what will probably be some very wonky ones.

Then my friends and their three lively children paid us a visit. I was happy to let the kids play outside with our new puppy - but one of them carried her up the steps to my vegetable beds where they caused havoc! I later found footprints on my carrot and beetroot bed!! Not amused - especially as these children's parents have an extensive vegetable patch, so they should have known better.
I've done what I can to gently replant the disturbed seedlings but god knows what's happened to the sowed seeds.

Is it too late to sow more seeds in another part of the bed?

My dog has been over the chard bed more times than I care to count, and with a ball at that. It's mostly survived, so don't despair!

Get yourself 4 succession sowings of autumn king in the soil direct, one lot every 2 weeks, between now and end of July. That way they won't all mature at the same time, and you'll get a nice through autumn early winter crop.

Thanks for that encouragement, micou. I'm probably a bit of a perfectionist - but the bed looked so nice and when I found it had been trampled I was pretty upset!

Thrutchington - I'll have a look for Autumn King... don't know if it's available here.

You really need a short-style carrot from now on, Vagabond; one which doesn't need to get too far down in the soil in time!

I'll be sowing this sort for a couple of months yet, so reckon you'll have plenty of time!

Just don't give up - carrots have a lovely way of rewarding you when you least expect them to, but they may not do that until late autumn!
