Lump!!!!
« on: July 01, 2010, 20:06 »
Hi  :)

I've two 11 day old chicks.
Earlier today I noticed that the mixed bantam has a small lump sort of thing on his/her head. It looks as if he/she may have knocked his/her head on something and a small lump has appeared.
He/she seems absolutely fine in him/herself, so I'm not too concerned at the moment.

Do you think he/she may have knocked it? Or maybe it's something else?

I don't think a photo will show much, but I can take one tomorrow if required  :).

Many thanks in advance  ;)
All lives are precious.

what sort of lump is it? is it a swelling or is it a thing that has broken out through the skin?
What breed is the chick?
Staffies are softer than you think.

She/he is a mixed bantam. I only had a brief look at the lump, for he/she was struggling and it was difficult to see, but I think it may be something broken out of the skin. Maybe like a sort of scab, but I'm not 100% sure. I'll try and get a better look tomorrow  :).

Just had another look at it and it's a lump (like if you bump your head, a lump will appear and the chick's lump looks like that) and its sort of scabby  ???. Maybe he/she has knocked it?

if she has any silkie or polish in her then you have to be very careful when they bang their heads as these breeds have a hole in their skulls (a bit like babies do when born) so please keep a close eye on her as you aren't sure of her parentage  :)

Thank you joyfull. All the chicken breeder told me was he/she is a mixed bantam. From what I can remember, she didn't talk of his/her parentage.
If the chick does have a hole in his/her skull and now this lump has appeared, is it a big problem? Is there anything I should do?

no just keep a close eye on him/her and hopefully it will go down. just keep checking how she/he holds their head and how they walk.

Thankfully it was a scab which came off today  :). We can still see the lump, but it has gone down a lot.
