Planting Leeks in August!!!
« on: August 18, 2014, 10:30 »
Hi
Have to confess to being lazy and having grown leeks in my greenhouse from seed I left them there until yesterday when I finally put them in my plot.  My question quite simply is am I likely to see any return from them (possibly "baby" leeks) or is it far too late to expect anything to develop that can be usable?  Fortunately I already have some in the plot that were planted in good time but another addition to the crop is always welcome :D

How big are the leeks now and what size pots are they in?

My leeks go in at the normal time of year, about late May/June for me. But for many years, in August, I have also bought a wet newspaper bunch of cheap dry rooted mussleborough from a local nursery and dibbed them in, usually that well worn yardstick pencil thickness and above. They have always grown well, but are more for the Spring than Winter, and cover that spell before the Japanese onions can be harvested as green onions. So, if they're up and running and a decent size, I don't see any problem at all.

I agree with beesrus. I put in some earlier and am already picking. This week I'll be buying in some more for use towards late winter, early spring.

A bit might depend on the variety, but any leek is better than no leek!

I had some leftovers with no space to put them in, but now I am getting space, I am not wasting the little ones.  Put some in yesterday, and some more when I come back from Kent in 2 weeks time.

Even if they are a bit on the small side, they will still get used!   :)

Thank you all for your replies.
Nobbie - they were mostly pencil thick but some slightly thinner, fingers crossed :D
Does not sound as though it will be wasted effort.

The ones I buy here at this time of year are a lot less than pencil-thick, just so's you know.

It will depend on the variety as to whether they are early or late ones but any leek is good!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
