I have 4 new plants grown from seed, they are now about 6 inches high and up until today looked very healthy.  This evening a few of the leaves are brown along the edges.  As I have never grown them before I was wondering if this normally happens with sage.

Can't say I've noticed.  Brown leaves if they've over-wintered yes, but new growth is fresh green before turning ... well ... sage green.

I'm sure they'll be fine 'cos sage is pretty tough.  You might want to nip out the shoot to encourage bushiness

It's the outer leaves with the brown, I have put them out into the garden the last few days and brought them in at night maybe they found it too cold

Righto.  I'm betting that it is soft indoor growth insufficiently hardened off.  I put sage (and most stuff) outside as soon as they germinate.

Harden off in a cold frame & then get it out of the pots and into the ground.

I agree that it will be ...

... perhaps either caught by the cold or wind.  But sage is actually tough as old boots and if you just harden it off as the others suggest it'll perk up.

I found a half dead bi-colour sage in a communal compost heap, which had been in pot or container, completely dried out.  And I took it out, dusted it off and popped it in my herb bed ... it's now beautiful and responded really quickly to tlc.
