Growing from seed
« on: May 04, 2009, 09:41 »
I am having problems getting seeds to germinate in my unheated 4ft by 2ft greenhouse/coldframe. It is south facing so gets the best of the sun and can get very wam on good days but cool at night.

What am I doing wrong?.

In addition to Shaun's question.

How old are the seed?

How deep are you sowing them?

What watering are you doing?

i have tries to grow cauli, leek, pepper, squash and this is my second attempt
i have tried with and without a covering of clingfilm and a plastic lid
the seeds are this years                                                                                                       i planted the seed deeper on the first attempt and shallower on the second
i water once or twice a day
i have also planted two types of sunflower seeds which should be easy to grow and only one type have germinated.

Have you thought about trying some different compost Jasper?  Sounds like you have eliminated everything else.  Perhaps try something really easy in the soil you are using - like radish or salad leaves.  If they don't gow then it must be the soil!

Sounds like the watering is the issue.

I would put most Brassica's at most a couple of mil down then water and leave alone and only water again if the compost was getting very dry.

I would definitely say you are over watering them!

Also, 'how' are you watering them?

Put compost into the container up to the level you want the seeds to be, that is after tapping down. Water, place the seeds on the wet compost, cover with dry compost and gently firm down, cover with clingfilm. DO NOT WATER AGAIN UNTIL THE SEEDLINGS SHOW AND THEN SPARINGLY.
