beetroot seedlings
« on: April 13, 2013, 17:31 »
Hi All

I germinated some beets in modules indoors and 3 seedlings have grown close together.
Do i pinch out the weakest and leave one?
Also...would i do the same for those germinated outdoors?

Thanks

I only grow direct, but do not thin out.

My beet are harvested at golf ball size and they are OK just gently pushing each other aside at that size.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yes - I pinch out to leave just one. I have to grow Beetroot in modules as I get a clay cap when sowing direct. I have done it for three years - I think the trick is to plant out the modules when they are still small - first set of true leaves formed - that way I get decent beetroot.

I don't thin out either, just start picking the 1st biggest one & so on, sow in modules & direct, same approach for both here.

thin out if you want big ones, leave in a clump if you don't mind smaller ones
